James City County Humane Societies are the Animal Control for James City County and Heritage Humane Society. The Animal Control for James City County mission is to protect the community concerning problem, neglected, and dangerous animals and to enforce the County and State Animal Laws. The Animal Control Offers many services to citizens including: The impoundment of stray dogs and dogs running at large. Every effort to return lost and found animals to their rightful owners. Offering animals for adoption. Trapping nuisance animals and wild stray dogs and cats. Assist with certain wildlife calls: raccoons and opossums.

The mission of Heritage Humane Society, Inc.is to provide for the care of injured, ill, stray, or unwanted companion animals of the city of Williamsburg, James City County, and the First District of York County, Virginia, so that a standard of care reflecting the values of the community can be achieved. This humane society has pets available for adoptions. A 24-hour hold Application for Adoption must be filled out. Heritage Humane Society requires that newly adopted pets be taken to a veterinarian for a health examination within 7 days of adoption. Microchips are required and included with all adoptions. HHS policy stipulates that all adopted animals be spayed or neutered before they are allowed to go to their new home. Assistance for
low cost spay/neuter assistance is provided for qualifying families.
