Both are considered above average institutions, and a third
is under construction in the Lightfoot area. For the 2001-2002 academic year,
the public school system was ranked among the top five school systems in the
Commonwealth of Virginia and in the top 15% nationwide by Expansion Management
Magazine. There are also two regional Governor's Schools in the area that serve
gifted and talented students.
Toano Middle School
holds classrooms from 6th-8th grade and has a total of 758 students. Two hundred
and fifty four students attend the 6th grade. Two hundred and fifty students
attend the 7th grade. Two hundred and fifty four students attend the 8th grade.
This Elementary School has approximately 70 teachers with a Student Ratio of
1:11. This Middle School student ethnic background is as follows: Asian 1%,
Hispanic 2%, Black 22%, and White 75%.
Lafayette High School
holds classrooms in grades 9th - 12th. Approximately 114 teachers teach the
schools curriculum to 1480 students. Three hundred and ninety eight students
attend the 9th grade; Three hundred and eighty students attend the 10th grade;
Three hundred and fifty students attend the 11th grade; Two hundred and ninety
students attend the 12th grade. Lafayette High School has a Teacher Student
Ratio of 1:12 and has the following ethnic background: Asian 2%, Hispanic 2%,
Black 21%, and White 74%.
Clara Byrd Baker Elementary
has approximately 687 students attending grades 6th – 8th. This elementary
has a total of 52 teachers with a Student Ratio 1:13. One hundred and four students
attend Kindergarten; Ninty eight students attend the 1st grade; One hundred
and sixteen students attend the 2nd grade; One hundred and two students attend
the 3rd grade; hundred and thirty two students attend the 4th grade; hundred
and thirty five students attend the 5th grade. Clara Byrd Baker Elementary has
the following ethnic background: American Indian 1%, Asian 3% , Hispanic 3%,
Black 18% and White 78%.
